Family Engagement
The importance of family engagement in transition planning
Due to the long relationship between family and child, family members play a crucial role in their child's transition from school to postsecondary settings. Families know their children before they start school and remain a part of their lives long after they exit school services. Their insight into the child's life outside of school provides transition teams with vital information on strengths, interests, and contributions in the home and community. Greater involvement and engagement by family members during the transition process yield better outcomes for young adults with disabilities as they transition to postsecondary success. Use these resources and materials to better engage and involve families in secondary transition planning.
