In this webcast, Dr. Mykal Leslie and Dr. Phillip Rumrill will identify current trends regarding the role and participation of people with disabilities in all aspects of society. They will examine the changing nature and needs of the American disability community. Lastly, they will describe issues facing Americans with emerging disabilities that have implications for outreach, eligibility determination, assessment, case planning, service delivery, and follow-up in the rehabilitation counseling process.
Bios:
Mykal Leslie, PhD, LPC, CRC is a faculty member in the Rehabilitation Counseling program at Kent State University. A nationally certified rehabilitation counselor and licensed professional counselor in Ohio, Mykal received his bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Marietta College, his master’s degree in Clinical and Rehabilitation Counseling from Ohio University, and his Ph.D. at Kent State University in Counselor Education and Supervision. He has served as a counselor in clinical and vocational rehabilitation settings where he provided services to adults and adolescents in inpatient, outpatient, and community settings, including providing counseling for individuals diagnosed with a variety of substance use and psychiatric disorders. He also has worked as a vocational rehabilitation counselor with Ohio Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation and the West Virginia Division of Rehabilitation Services, where he counseled and provided vocational services for adults with a wide range of neurological, physical, sensory, and psychiatric disabilities.
Phillip Rumrill, PhD, CRC is the Director of Research and Training with a faculty appointment in the area of Rehabilitation Counseling at the University of Kentucky Human Development Institute. Dr. Rumrill received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Keene State College in New Hampshire and his doctorate from the University of Arkansas. He is a nationally Certified Rehabilitation Counselor and most recently served as the Founding Director of the Center for Disability Studies at Kent State University and Director of the Multiple Sclerosis Employment Assistance Services. Over the course of his career, Dr. Rumrill has authored or co-authored 251 professional journal articles; 42 book chapters, monographs, measurement instruments, and training manuals; and 15 books. He is a highly sought out speaker at national and international conferences in health care, social sciences, rehabilitation, and education and has delivered addresses to consumer, professional, academic, and policymaking audiences in 43 states and U.S. territories and 18 countries since 1992.
