Augmentative and Alternative Communication: Assessing Needs and Aligning Supports for Students
This webcast will provide an overview of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) for parents and educators who support students with complex communication needs. An overview of AAC data, tools and supports for educators and families will be provided. Examples of AAC assessment considerations, resources, and strategies for treatment will be shared.
Marie Ireland. M.Ed. CCC-SLP, BCS-CL serves as the Virginia Department of Education's educational specialist for Speech Language Pathology (SLP) and evaluation and Eligibility decision making. She is a board certified specialist in child language who provides professional development and technical assistance for evaluation and eligibility, language diversity, and general special education issues in Virginia. Mrs. Ireland received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh, her master’s degree from the University of Virginia. She is the Vice Chair for the American Speech Language Hearing Association’s (ASHA) SLP advisory council, is past president of the State Education Association Communication Disabilities Council, and serves on a national Medicaid committee as well as a committee to restructure research journals for the ASHA.
