Meet Me Where I Am: Caring for Students with Autism and Supporting Families in Native American Community
Cultural sensitivity, authenticity, and holistic approach to educational process and services are essential when working with Native American students with Autism and their families. By understanding and respecting the rich cultural traditions, family values, and practices help educators create a meaningful learning environment for the students. Above all, families and communities are an important part of students’ educational journey. Therefore, communicate, connect, build strong relationships, and meet the students where they are through attentive teaching!
Presenter Bio:
Nerissa Birdsell - Educator, ESS Teacher Lead, Consultant
Nerissa Birdsell has been an educator for 19 years in a rural public school in Arizona, holding multiple roles: special education teacher, transition specialist, coach, mentor, and Instructional Leadership Team ESS lead. As a Special Education teacher, she designed special instructions and skill-targeted activities for her students who have varying disabilities, recognizing their strengths, talents, and interests. She taught and supported students who were in resource and inclusion classes. As a Transition Specialist, she focused on creating opportunities for students to participate in activities centered on education, exposure, and experience in preparation for post-school life. She engaged families and collaborated with service professionals to create career opportunities for students. Nerissa has presented locally and nationally, sharing her work in transition and her experiences working in the Native American community and disability field. She values relationships with families and respects their community, culture, practices, and traditions.
