Readiness to enter the workforce today requires more complex knowledge and skills than in the past. Work-based learning is an effective method to assist students in the transition from the classroom to the workplace by participating in supervised hands-on experiences directly related to career interests and goals. These activities are an extension of the classroom and provide opportunities to connect acquired academic, technical, employability skills and competencies to the demands of the 21st century workplace.
Coordinating Work-Based Learning Experiences
Coordinating well planned work-based learning experiences is an integral part of the transition planning process for students with disabilities. Each experience should be individualized and seen as part of the larger process of career development. These activities should sequentially build upon each other and provide the skills and foundation to lead students through awareness, exploration, preparation and training toward a career pathway of interest.
